Pitts Family

(Puette, Pitt, Pyts and Pitte)

The Pitt (Pitts) Family is said to come from the Norman Gervase de la Puette, born about 1160 in what is now the Normandy province of France. Thomas de la Pitte was born about 1200 in England. Simon de la Pitte was born about 1230 in England. Thomas Ithe Pitte was born around 1260 in England.  Robert Ithe Pitte was born about 1284 in England and died 1361 in England. Simon Atte Pitte. Richard Pyts, who married Johanna de la Poole. Johannes (John) Pitts born in DeCurvyard, DeLaPyrne, married Dorothia (last name unknown), and died in 1438. William Pitt was at Stoke, married Katherine Broughton and died after 1400. Sir Edward Pitt, who married Elizabeth Nicholai Willford, and died in 1455.  William Bithe Pitte was born in 1477 in Dorset and died in 1528.

Nicholas Pitt  born in 1474 and died after 1545. He married (name unknown).
I only have one son listed William Pitt.


William Pitt  married Helena Haviland. William died Oct. 14, 1540 and was the ancestor of British Prime Minister William Pitt, the Earl of Chatham.

Thomas Pitt born 1547 and died after 1613. Thomas married Priscilla Searle about 1560. Thomas was the Chamberlain of Bristol and a merchant. Thomas' son William and William's son Robert were ship owners.

Colonel Robert Pitts born in 1607 England and died June 16, 1672 in VA.  He married to Martha Lear in 1630. Martha was born in 1607 and died in 1967.  Robert was a Col. of Isle of Wright. Capt. of a privateer of Bristol named the "Thunder", aiding the Huguenots in the war against France in 1628. Robert was a large dealer in land and servants. As a sea merchant he owned a fleet of ships which sailed out of Port at Bristol, England.  Robert is the first to come to America. He served as a Colonel in the VA Militia.

  9. John Pitts was born in 1637 in England.  He died about 1702 in Isle of Wright County, VA. He first married Sarah Moone and second Olive Hardy. John & Olive's children were Martha, Mary, Robert and Sarah Pitts.

Henry Pitts born in 1645 in Isle of Wright, VA.  married Mary Galloway in 1668.  Mary is the daughter of Thomas Galloway.

John Pitts b. Abt. 1700 in Virginia married Elizabeth Gardner.
They had three sons; Andrew, John and David Pitts.

From "Essex County, VA-Wills, Bonds, Inventories, ETC. (1722-1730) page 388:  Will of John Pitts of St. Ann's in Essex, being of weak in body, dated Jan 23, 1728.
"To Elizabeth my wife all my whole estate during her natural life and after her decease unto my grandson John Pitts 75 acres...." Wit: John West, John Clark (JC), William Brown.




Andrew Pitts born  1725 (born between 1725-1728) in England and died in 1772-78 in Rowan County, North Carolina.  Andrew married Martha Stroud ABT 1741 in Guilford, NC. Andrew and Martha came from Frederick Co. VA. to Rowan County, NC. about 1750. Martha is the daughter of Samuel & Anna Stroud. Martha was born 1713 in England and died 1823 in Stokes Co., NC. Andrew and Martha had twelve children.  Andrew Pitts was a Tailor.  They had land on the head waters of Deep River Section near Bunker Hill Church.

The first records of Andrew Pitts in Rowan County are court records and a 1759 tax list.

Andrew Pitts, a tailor, let Robert Barkley, both of Rowan County, have five cows, fives calves and one gray horse abour four years old, branded NE on the buttocks, for 14 pounds and 10 shillings; witness, Herman Butner, Oct. 13, 1759.

Richard ? vs Andrew Pitts, Debt, Jury; Henry Sloan, Will Harges, Edward McGuire, John Long, Joseph Bryan, James Harper, Luke Dean and John Howard--we find for the defendant that there is no such record. Jan. 22, 1765.

Thomas married  Rachel Sturgeon (Sturgill)(Hall)  on Dec. 27, 1840. Rachel Sturgeon 1820-1901, d/o Rodden "Nimrod" Hall and  Mary Sturgeon (Sturgill).  They had eleven children.  Rachel was born in VA.

Greenville "Green" Pitts 1846-1925
Green was born on Pittsfork, Floyd County, KY. He died in Greenup, KY.
Green is buried at the Mt. Olive (Methodist Church Lot) Cemetery.

Green was married three times:

1st: Martha Jane Barnett
2nd : Trusty (?)
3rd: Parisade Martin born in KY

He didn't have any children with his first two wives.
He had three children with his 3rd wife Parisade Martin.

  2. Marion Pitts  born 1874 and died Aug. 04, 1958
  3. Elizabeth Pitts 1881- (died young)

Green Pitts (Farmer) age 52 and Parasade age 50.
States that they have been married 30 years. Parasade has Three children listed with two living as of 1900.  Green is listed as being out of work for 6 months.  Neither of them can read or write.  They own their home.

1910 US Census for Greenup, KY

Greenville Pitts  age 56 (self), Parasade Pitts age 61 (wife). Parasade had three children with two living as of 1910. Marion Pitts age 34 (son). Mary A. (Marion's Wife) age 28 (listed as Greenville's daughter-in-law).  It also states that Mary had seven children with two living as of 1910.  Adam Pitts age 11 and Ollie Pitts age 6. Adam & Ollie are Marion & Mary's children. They are listed as Greenville's grandchildren.



Marion Pitts born Oct. 23, 1876 in Floyd Co. KY., and died Aug. 04, 1958 in Greenup Co., KY. He married Mary Anna "Liza" Moore on Feb. 14, 1895.  Mary Anna "Liza"  is also know as  Annaliza "Lizzy" Moore and is listed in most of the US Census as Eliza Pitts. She is the daughter of Frank & Sarah Moore. 


Marion & Liza's Children:
  1. Adam Pitts  June 1899-1975. Adam married Goldie Frasure.  They had six children. Robert Marion, John Franklin, James Green "Jim Bud", Cabel, Ollie Belle and Adria Frances.
  2. Ollie Mae Pitts 1902-1997. Ollie Mae married John Frasure (see Frasure Family Tree)

Marion Pitts (Farmer)age 25 and Eliza Pitts age 25.  Eliza has five children listed with only one living as of 1900. Adam Pitts age 11 months.  Marion & Eliza can read and write.  Marion has been out of work for 3 months. They own their home.
